Martha encounters a UNIT cover-up in the wake of the 456, and contacts Torchwood for help. Gwen, Martha, and the new Torchwood team must work together to bring the truth to light — and save Ianto. A wonderfully plotted story of the rebirth of Torchwood that takes the “21st Century is where everything changes” concept and runs with it, in a way that fits seamlessly into TW/DW canon. This is intercut beautifully with snapshots of Ianto’s past at Torchwood, giving some great insight into Ianto and the team, past and present. This is exactly the kind of thing I hope for in the aftermath of CoE; it feels like a beginning, rather than an ending. It’s utterly heart-wrenching and absolutely brilliant, with some fantastic characterization, and great use of multiple POVs to get both the insider and outsider perspective on the team. I don’t really have the words to say how much this affected me, other than to say if you read one CoE fix-it fic, make it this one. Highly, highly recommended.
